Newland House School Engineering Project

For the past year, Newland House School Engineering Club has been studying the effects of under-inflation of tires on CO2 emissions, with hopes of reducing the amount of the harmful gas in the UK.
Their studies reached the conclusion that having the correct tire pressure has a massive impact on both tire life and CO2 emissions.

In fact, they discovered that 20% under-inflation leads to both a 3%-4% increase in fuel consumption and a 15%-30% reduction in tire life.  Worse yet, 70%-90% of cars in the UK have incorrectly inflated tires.  This leads to a massive and unnecessary consumption of fuel.

They then did calculations regarding the impact one driver could make.  If a driver constantly kept his tires at the right pressure, not only would he save £69 ($106) per year, but also save 122 kilograms of CO2 from entering the atmosphere.  Then they multiplied these values by the 34 million cars on the roads of the United Kingdom.  The result is astounding.  If every driver in the UK would keep their tires at the correct pressure, 1,802 million liters of fuel could be saved (resulting in 4145 million kilograms of CO2 prevented from being produced).

Despite the huge impact made by having the correct tire pressure and various government campaigns to make vehicles “greener”, most people still do not check their tires regularly, resulting in the problem we have today.  Their solution? A device that would alert the driver to significant drops in their tire pressure.  After doing some research, they discovered three different “valve caps” currently on the market intended to warn for a drop in tire pressure.  After testing the different brands with their rigs and machines, they determined that Tyre Pressure LED was the definitive best brand to buy, due to its clear warning flashes, accuracy, and theft-prevention, among other positive aspects.

After discovering the positive impact the Tyre Pressure LED could have on their community and their country, Newland House School Engineering Club vowed to contact the Mayor of London (Air Quality), Secretary of State for Transport, Shadow minister for Energy and Industry, Department for Transport, and The Consumer Association and encourage them to act upon their findings, promoting the Tyre Pressure LED as a simple solution to UK’s pollution problem.  We hope that they will have success with the higher ups in UK’s government and that the United Kingdom may then become an example for “going green” world-wide.
