Tire pressure has become an important issue in today's automotive industry. For example, in the USA, all passenger vehicles of 2008 model year or newer are required to have a built-in tire pressure monitoring system. The European Union is contemplating following suit. Strangely enough, however, heavy vehicles are not affected by this law, despite being more dependent on correct tire pressure than most other vehicles. In the UK, it is against the law to drive with over or under-inflated tires, yet the National Highway Traffic Safety Administrative states that, on average, there are 10 deaths on UK roads caused every day by the sudden failure of under-inflated tires. They also estimate that over 10,000 injuries and fatalities could be prevented by monitoring tire pressure to keep them at their ideal levels.
According to data from the USA National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, tire pressure-related accidents killed nearly 3,400 people over a five-year period. Further, 150,000 people were injured in these accidents.
